As Carlmont's monthly student newsmagazine, the Highlander provides coverage of popular culture, pressing social issues, and My role on the Highlander has been as a staff writer, and over the course of the past school year, I've covered topics from illicit substances at Carlmont to the unhoused population to government inaction on climate change. 

Opinion: The time is now

Ignoring a problem such as climate change won't make it magically go away. Even after calls for intervention from youth and activists worldwide, little is being done to address one of the greatest threats of the present day. This article reinforces the need for action to be taken, written in the context of the COP26 climate conference. Essentially, it communicates a key message: actions speak magnitudes of volume louder than words.

Scotlight: High School Taboos

This Scotlight feature discusses three main taboos that are rarely discussed openly or in the classroom: drugs, sex, and alcohol. By exploring the personal narratives of a variety of anonymous sources, Marrisa Chow and I collaborated to present readers with the unfiltered truth and prompt greater discussion.

Humanizing homelessness: The stories of Miguel, Karina, and Manuel

An issue that has increased in severity and prevalence over the past few years in California, the homelessness crisis is constantly discussed. But rarely do we get the point of view of the unhoused themselves. This article represents the diverse experiences and perspectives of the unhoused populations and proposes potential avenues to work towards a solution for this crisis.
